On Friday, Dec. 3, Mississippi Aquarium received 40 cold-stunned Kemp's ridley sea turtles from the New England Aquarium. The turtles flew into Gulfport Friday afternoon, courtesy of Turtles Fly Too, a non-profit organization that flies injured turtles to rehabilitation locations. The veterinary staff at Mississippi Aquarium is treating the turtles in its offsite research center.

Kemp's ridley sea turtle conservation is integral to Mississippi Aquarium's mission, having rehabilitated and released more than 60 turtles into the Mississippi Sound since 2020.
In recognition of its steadfast work with Kemp's ridleys, the Aquarium was selected by NOAA Fisheries and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services as the recipient of one of 10 adults, non-releasable Kemp's ridley sea turtles.
Mississippi Aquarium Associate Veterinarian Dr. Sean Perry and staff released three endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtles into the Gulf Of Mexico. Thursday's release was the second from Mississippi Aquarium's research boat.
The Kemp's ridley sea turtles, which are native to the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, were flown to Mississippi Aquarium via Turtles Fly Too from New England Aquarium in late 2021. The turtles were cold-stunned from the cold waters of the Northern Atlantic Ocean.
MSAQ has established a monarch butterfly conservation program with a goal to bring awareness to the plight of this amazing butterfly, demonstrate how everyone can help, and also collect data critical to better understanding how monarchs utilize the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
